On this day in 1975, the USS Laffey decommissioned for the second and final time. She was previously decommissioned in 1944 and recommissioned in 1951 to serve in the Korean War. The decommissioning ceremony took place at the Franklin Street Pier in Alexandria, Virginia. Six years later, in 1981, the USS Laffey became part of the fleet at Patriots Point. Commissioned too late for combat, USS Clamagore went on to serve through three decades of change—from World War II’s end to the height of the Cold War. Rebuilt as a rare GUPPY III submarine, she later became a museum at Patriots Point, standing beside Yorktown and Laffey as a memorial to the Silent Service.
